Touring the Capitol and Library of Congress in Washington DC

For my 40th birthday, we headed to Washington DC. Despite only living a few hours drive away, we hadn’t visited DC in years, so it was definitely time to go back.

Since hotels and parking fees are much more expensive in DC proper, we stayed outside of DC in Rockville, MD. We chose Rockville due to its proximity to the Metro station. Our hotel was only a block away from the red line that takes you to the middle of the city. We got a metro day pass that gave us unlimited rides for $15 each. It was much more convenient than driving in and having to deal with traffic and parking meters. I highly recommend taking advantage of the metro while in DC. It will take you wherever you want to go.

On this trip, we toured the Capitol Building and The Library of Congress, two buildings that both Mark and I have wanted to see for years. Like almost everything in DC, both these tours were free, but you do need to make a reservation online. The Capitol Building tour is guided (our tour guide was super knowledgeable!) while the Library of Congress is self-guided. The two buildings are across the street from each other, so you can easily do both in one day.
